The first song I ever wrote was when I was six years old. I scribbled some lyrics in likely nearly-illegible writing, and my dad sat me on his lap and we played the piano together, putting music to my words.
Growing up from there I took piano lessons, of course. I loved sitting down and making up songs, and in middle school found my way to improv comedy. Some of my favorite games were the kind where you had to rhyme quickly, and even make up entire songs, right on the spot.
I was also deeply inspired by one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time - "Weird Al" Yankovic. I found myself writing parodies to popular songs, and still do that today. I enjoyed twisting lyrics and getting creative. Maybe "YourTune: My Way" has a future?
YourTune is a way for me to share songs with the world, hopefully making it just that much better of a place. As I write more songs with more names, I hope more will have their day brightened up. The YouTube comments have been overwhelmingly positive and inspiring - complete strangers hear their song and feel special. That's what it's all about.
But I don't plan on stopping with these songs. I hope this project is only the beginning of songs I get to share with the world. I'd love to write jingles, or movie music. I'm in a great band, Angelou, and of course I'm working on my own band-type music too.
The best thing about writing songs is that no matter where I am, I can always sit down and create something new.
